The crisp autumn air and beautiful falling leaves can only mean one thing: it’s time to start thinking about winterising your pool. Closing your pool for the winter months doesn’t have to be a daunting task, with a little preparation, you can ensure your pool is in tip-top shape for next year.

Here are some top tips from the Wellington swimming pool experts at Wright Pools and Spas to help you winterise your pool:

1. Clear Debris From The Pool

It’s important to remove any leaves, dirt or other debris from your pool before closing it for the winter. Leaves contain phosphates, which are food for algae. Removing leaves will help prevent algae and make it easier to prepare your pool for reopening in the spring.

2. Backwash The Filter And Use Filter Brite For More Efficient Filtration

Make sure your pool’s filter is thoroughly cleaned before winter. Backwash the filter and use Filter Brite to clean the media for more efficient filtration. This will help maintain your water quality throughout the winter, making it easier to get your pool up and running in the spring.

3. Balance The Water And Reduce Chlorine Levels

Bring a water sample to Wright Pools & Spas for a free water test to ensure your pool water is balanced. It’s also important to reduce chlorine levels to maintain a free chlorine level between 1-2 PPM during the winter months.

4. Add A Copper-Based Algaecide

Algae can still grow in cool temperatures, and if left unchecked, can lead to a green, murky pool come springtime. By adding a copper-based algaecide such as Algatac or MSA II, it will inhibit the growth of algae and other microorganisms by releasing copper ions into the water.

5. Reduce Filtration Time

Reduce filtration time to 6 hours a day through autumn and 4 hours per day through winter. This will save energy and prolong the life of your pool’s equipment.

6. Switch Off The Heat Pump (If You Have One)

To save on your energy bills, if you have a heat pump, switch it off for the winter months.

7. Clean And Store Pool Covers

If you have a floating pool cover, give it a good hosing down to get rid of any debris, and store it away until next season. If you have a debris cover, be sure to install it to prevent any unwanted matter from finding its way into your pool.

For those with an electric cover, take the time to give it a gentle brushing to ensure it’s clean and free of any dirt or debris.

8. Add Pool Optimise

Adding Pool Optimise will get you better results from your sanitiser. It helps clarify and produce sparkly, silky water, suppresses algae growth and remains in your pool for the duration of the winter months.

9. Get Maintenance Done On Your Pool

Winter is a great time to get any maintenance done on your pool. This could include getting your pool’s equipment serviced, filtration media changed, pumps and automatic chlorinator serviced, or any pool issues sorted. Wright Pools and Spas offer a range of one-off pool service packages that cover all the jobs above.
